The project
Ground Truth is an editorial platform for geopolitical analysis that uses satellite imagery — optical, radar, multispectral — as a tool for reading international events. Contributions are published or publishable in Italian news outlets, and are archived here in navigable form for researchers, newsrooms and interested readers.
The principle is straightforward: satellite imagery has become accessible, but interpreting it requires expertise. This space aims to bridge the gap between technical data and public understanding of events, with scientific rigour and accessible language.
The author
Piero Boccardo is Full Professor of Geomatics at Politecnico di Torino (DIST — Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning). Since 1996, his research has focused on Earth observation, digital cartography and digital photogrammetry, with particular attention to the use of high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery.
He is director and co-founder of ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action), a centre established by Politecnico di Torino and Compagnia di San Paolo, which applies geomatics to supporting humanitarian emergencies internationally — with active contracts for the European Commission (Copernicus Emergency Management Service), ESA, the World Bank and UN agencies. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications and has received the Certificate of Recognition from the ISPRS.
